I’ve always thought of Jay-Z as this generation’s Frank Sinatra.  It’s an easy connection to make.  He’s the biggest recording artist in the world.  He has his own Rat Pack (Roc-a-Fella).  He’s widely regarded as one of the coolest people on Earth.  He has his own New York City anthem.  He makes no bones about being tied to organized crime.   Jay-Z, himself, even makes the comparisons quite often (DOA, Empire State of Mind, Pray, Threat, Hola Hovito).

But, while they have numerous similarities, Jay-Z is not this generation’s Frank Sinatra.  I once heard a music critic say, (and I’m paraphrasing here because I can’t remember exactly how he put it) what made Frank Sinatra so unique was his ability to speak for an entire generation and to concisely sum up what that generation was feeling and going through at the time.  That’s where Jay and Frank diverge.  Jay-Z doesn’t speak for the masses.  Early…
